Tom Gaffney is a New York-based journalist and senior staff editor at The New York Times. His areas of interest include economics, international affairs, politics and the future of media.

Tom holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross, where he studied political science and Chinese, and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, where he studied economics and public policy. He was a founding member and senior editor of the Columbia Public Policy Review.

He was named a Fulbright Scholar in 2008 and spent a year in China researching economic development at the University of Macau. In 2015, he was awarded Columbia’s Julius Blocker Fellowship to study international economics in Germany. 

He serves on the board of directors for the Fulbright Alumni Association of Greater New York and he edits the group's newsletter. He enjoys running (Rome is his favorite marathon), reading, chess, golf and baking.
